MSC senior to receive Lumen Gentium Award

WOONSOCKET - Moira McCarty from Mount St. Charles Academy Class of 2014 is one of 15 recipients of the Lumen Gentium Award for Distinguished Catholic Youth from the Diocese of Providence. McCarty is being honored for "living her Catholic faith within the community and church."

She volunteers at the Father Marot CYO Center helping with retreats and working with her peers, and she is also active in her parish, St. James Church in Manville. She is an altar server and is part of the youth ministry committee, as well as the choir. At Mount, McCarty has been involved for three years with the academy's Campus Ministry program, which is responsible for the spiritual life of the Mount community. In her junior year, she served as the assistant campus worship director, and as a senior this year, she is head of campus ministry.

"Sharing her faith with those around her, McCarty is an exceptional example of what it means to be a Catholic witness through service and ministry to her parish and local community, the diocese, and those in great need," stated a press release on the award.

The Lumen Gentium award has 10 categories: parish service; community service and charitable outreach; Catholic education; evangelization; administration and stewardship; respect life; public service; communications; friend of the diocese; and distinguished Catholic youth. The diocese received 190 nominations which were reviewed and given to Bishop Tobin for his final approval. Of the 190, 15 individuals or groups were chosen to be honored.

Edwin Burke, principal of MSC, said, "We at Mount St. Charles are extremely proud of the work that Moira does in service to the family of God. She is a young woman who lives her faith with joy and exuberance. As a school community, we join her family in celebrating Moira's accomplishment and recognition for her outstanding dedication."

This year's Lumen Gentium Awards ceremony and dinner will be held on Wednesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. at the Twin River Events Center in Lincoln. McCarty currently resides in North Smithfield.
