Suspicious bag at North Smithfield mosque found to be harmless

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A "suspicious" duffle bag left at Mashid Al Islam Temple at 40 Sayles Hill Road prompted church officials to notify authorities, but turned out to contain nothing but clothing.

According to a press release from the North Smithfield Police Department, local officers and Rhode Island State Police responded to the mosque on Thursday, April 17 at 7:42 p.m.

"As a precaution the building, as well as surrounding homes was evacuated while officers waited for the bomb squad to arrive and investigate the contents of the duffle bag," said Police Chief Steven Reynolds in a statement.

The bomb squad determined that the bag contained only clothing.
