Woonsocket to hold Earth Day cleanup April 19

WOONSOCKET – As part of the Clean Up Woonsocket effort on Saturday, April 19, the City of Woonsocket Solid Waste Division in conjunction with Waste Management of Rhode Island will be passing out free trash grabbers to Woonsocket residents.

For Earth Day 2014 the city is asking everyone to clean the street that they live on. If the street is already clean or volunteers would like to do more, then officials ask that you pick litter in neighboring woods, streams and/or parks.

To check in for the city-wide event, visit the Woonsocket Recycle Facility at 943 River St. between 8 and 10 a.m. Approved clean up bags, gloves and trash pickers will be passed out upon check in, and the trash pickers and gloves will be free to keep.

"We ask that you continue throughout the year to help keep Woonsocket clean by using the trash pickers to collect and properly dispose of litter that you see," explained a release from the city's Solid Waste Division.

The city asks that residents place the full approved clean up bags and larger collected items along the side of the roadway in the area that they clean. A city truck will come by and dispose of the waste.

"It is important to check in so that we know where you will be leaving the collected litter," the release stated.

The recycling facility will also be hosting a free paper shredding event on April 19 for Woonsocket residents.

The shredding will run for 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. or until the trucks are full.

The hours of the recycle facility will also be extended for the day and it will operate from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Recyclables include: TVs, all electric waste (anything with a cord on it, including computers and monitors), metals of all shapes/sizes, clothing, books, propane tanks, Styrofoam, rigid plastic, vegetable oil, large cardboard, and all appliances (stoves, refrigerators, air conditioners, grills, etc.)
