O'Grady proposes new cleaning products for schools

PROVIDENCE - State Rep. Jeremiah T. O'Grady, of District 46 in Lincoln and Pawtucket, has proposed legislation to set guidelines that encourage the use of healthier cleaning products in schools.

The legislation, 2014-H 7827, would require the Department of Education to consult with the Department of Health to develop and regularly update guidelines and specifications for "environmentally preferable" cleaning and maintenance products, equipment and paper for use in school facilities.

School departments would be expected to purchase these products after they deplete their current supplies.

"The primary goal of this legislation is to make schools healthier for children and staff with asthma or other respiratory issues that are triggered by commonly used industrial cleaners," O'Grady said in a press release.
