Woonsocket man flees traffic stop, later caught with heroin, cash

WOONSOCKET – A city man ran from the scene of a traffic stop this week only to be pulled over in a different vehicle a half hour later, and caught with of 17 bags of heroin and $4,500 cash.

John Garcia, 18, of 193 Arnold St. was arrested on Monday, June 2 and charged with possession with intent to deliver. Also arrested was Alexis Cartagena, 27, of Arnold Street. Cartagena was charged with possession with intent to deliver, and a Municipal Court warrant.

According to police, Garcia was the passenger in a vehicle traveling east on Cass Avenue around 5:45 p.m., when Officer Patrick McGourty noticed the car had a Rhode Island registration and a Massachusetts inspection sticker.

McGourty pulled over, but said that as he approached the vehicle, the passenger fled on foot. The driver, Myles Connor, was cited for operation of a unregistered vehicle, operating without evidence of insurance, and driving without an inspection sticker.

Around a half hour later, Det. Sgt. Kevin Greenough conducted a separate traffic stop by of Trudeau’s Auto Body on Cass Avenue, and noticed that the passenger in the vehicle fit the description of the man who had just fled the scene of the previous stop.

A search of that vehicle turned up 17 individually wrapped baggies of heroin, and over $4,500 in cash. Both driver Cartagena, and passenger Garcia were arrested.
