Tennis festival coming to Slater Park Saturday

PAWTUCKET – The second annual United States Tennis Association Rhode Island Tennis Festival will take place this Saturday, June 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Slater Memorial Park. The free event will feature tennis fun and games, mini-lessons, as well as program, equipment and tournament information, raffles and prizes.

“We are looking to make this a fun tennis event for the entire family,” said Doug Chapman, president of USTA Rhode Island. “The entire state of Rhode Island, as well as tennis enthusiasts and novices from surrounding communities, are all welcome to attend.”

The event will include children age 10 and younger, tennis mini-lessons for juniors, adults, and seniors, and other games. Attendees will also learn how to get involved in USTA programs, including Junior Team Tennis, Adult League Tennis and tournament play, as well as how to get involved in their local community tennis programs.

Among those expected to participate are certified professionals, college and high school coaches, racket and equipment providers, and representatives from the International Tennis Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, the New Haven Open, the Boston Lobsters of World Team Tennis and the Pawtucket Red Sox.

“We want this event to help to kick off a great summer of tennis around the state,” said Chapman.

USTA Rhode Island is the state association of the United States Tennis Association, whose mission is promoting and developing the growth of tennis.
