Beacon performance chosen for International Thespian Festival

WOONSOCKET - Beacon Charter High School for the Arts' production of "First Encounters of the Quirky Kind" has been selected to represent Rhode Island at the 2014 International Thespian Festival later this month at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Beacon's Principal Michael Skeldon, "and the entire Beacon community is so proud of theater arts teachers Dawn Souza and Jason Robert LeClair and all of the student artists who made this possible."

"'First Encounters of the Quirky Kind' is a compilation of contemporary comic scenes depicting what happens when strangers meet for the first time and are placed in unordinary circumstances," explained Dawn Souza, the production's director, "and these young theater artists did an amazing job with very challenging material."

On June 23, 20 students from the cast and crew along with three members of the faculty will head to the University of Nebraska for the festival. For seven days, the students will take workshops, view productions from high schools across the country, and have the opportunity to perform their production as part of a special showcase series.

For the past several weeks, the Beacon community has been busy raising funds to help with travel expenses and they are still looking for help to cover the costs of the opportunity.
