Mayor proclaims June 21 St. Jude Research Hospital Day

WOONSOCKET - It's been a local tradition for 41 years, with a radio station donating a six-hour time slot to raise money for a great cause. And this year, it's been recognized by mayoral proclamation.

Tune in to WOON 1240 on Saturday, June 21 for a radiothon to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The program, which starts at 10:30 a.m., will include an auction of prizes to raise funds for the facility, which treats children with cancer and other childhood diseases regardless of their family's ability to pay.

According to Joe Hyder, founder of the Woonsocket chapter of the organization, some of the biggest items ever will be up for bid at this year's event with proceeds to help the hospital continue its research and treatment for children. Items up for bid include two Red Sox autographed baseballs, a stay at the Castle Hill Inn and Resort on Ocean Drive in Newport with breakfast and afternoon tea included, and dinner at over 20 different area restaurants.

In honor of the annual event, organized by volunteers at the Woonsocket chapter, Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt has proclaimed Saturday, June 21, 2014 St. Jude Research Hospital Day "in honorable recognition of its fine pediatric care."

Hyder will join radio personality Romeo Berthiaume on the program, along with co-hosts Pete Royce and Rep. Bob Phillips.
