Search for teen ends in tragedy

CUMBERLAND – There was sad ending at mid-day Thursday in the disappearance of 14-year-old Mathew Rockefeller.

The boy's body was discovered in a wooded area near his house at the end of New Clark Road.

Foul play was not suspected but Chief John Desmaris would release no further details pending a report by the state medical examiner's office.

Mathew, a young athlete who was co-captain and right-fielder for the North Cumberland Middle School baseball team this past season, was the son of Raymond Rockefeller and Jill Varian.

The body was found even as police and firefighters were searching the Blackstone River using rescue boats held at the Cumberland Hill and Valley Falls stations.

The search for the boy began Tuesday when he was first reported missing and widened on Wednesday and leads started pouring in after his mom posted a plea for help on her Facebook page, said the chief.

Fliers had been posted around town and members of his baseball team were involved in the search.
