Charles A. Atwood - Scituate

Charles A. Atwood, 96, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, peacefully at home surrounded by loving family. He was the husband of the late Norma L. (Tucker) Atwood.

A lifelong Scituate resident, he was a son of the late Grace (Atwood) Austin. Mr. Atwood was a heavy equipment operator for the town of Scituate for 32 years before retiring in 1976.

He was World War II veteran, United States Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees). He was a lifelong member of the North Scituate Fire Department; a 60-year member of American Legion Post #19; a member of the Civil Defense; Scituate Grange; and North Scituate Baptist Church for more than 68 years.

He loved gardening and working on cars and all types of motors. Known for his Yankee ingenuity, he built a wood stove for his home and his own log splitter that he used to split wood even at 96 years of age.

He was the loving father of Barbara L. Tucker, Peggy E. Leveille and Janice A. Holzinger, all of Scituate. He was the grandfather of Stephanie R. Vaughan, Stacie MacLeod, Justin Chew, Mallory Chew, Michael Lowery and Jason Lowery; and great-grandfather of Dayton Chew. He was the brother of Earl Austin of Newport, Doris Cole of Tiverton and the late Ruth Johnston and Alice Lascowitch.

At his request, his funeral and burial will be private.
