Sr. Simone Decelles

Sr. Simone L. Decelles, Franciscan Missionary of Mary, Ein Karim Community, North Smithfield, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at St. Antoine Residence. She was born in Woonsocket, R.I., the daughter of the late Achille and Alpherida (Bachand) Decelles.

She entered the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, at North Providence, March 16, 1941, where she pronounced her first vows Sept. 17, 1943, and her final vows, Sept. 17, 1946.

Sr. Simone’s ministry throughout her missionary life was teaching. After pronouncing her first vows, she began teaching in Mount St. Francis Orphanage in Woonsocket. She then taught in Our Lady of Good Counsel School in Orient Heights, East Boston.

Most of her years as a teacher were spent in Espiritu Santo School in Fall River, Mass., from 1952 to 1986. She then helped slow learners at a grandparents program in public schools in Fall River. She also taught religious education in several parishes in Fall River and did home visitation. She served in local leadership.

In 1994, she was sent in mission to Holy Family Community, where she taught religious education in St. Thomas Parish in Providence, R.I. She was also involved in community service doing secretarial work.

In 2006, she was sent in mission to Queen of Peace Community, Fruit Hill, where her ministry was that of intercessory prayer for the church and the world. When her health declined further, she was missioned to St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield.

She is survived by many nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews.

Visiting hours are Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a wake service at 7 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel, Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence; Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Holy Family Chapel.
