SMITHFIELD - The newly opened 645 Restaurant & Bar, aptly named for its location at 645 Douglas Pike, features an Italian-American menu, but according to owner Bob Buitta, the eatery is not "just another Italian restaurant."

While the name might sound generic, Buitta said it's because "in a state with too many Italian eateries, The 645 has something for everyone."

While quality food and great service are two of Buitta's priorities, family also plays an important role in the business.

Buitta and his wife, Carlene, own the restaurant, and the couple's three daughters all work alongside their parents; Nikole serves as one of two assistant managers, and Dana and Tara switch between hostessing and waitressing.

A businessman for decades, Buitta had never owned a restaurant before The 645, but he wanted to do something different, something for his family, he said.

In the past, work kept Buitta from spending time with his wife and daughters, but managing the restaurant affords them all much-desired family time.

"I never thought I would get to work with my daughters," Buitta told The Valley Breeze & Observer, adding that it's been a nice experience so far.

Under the direction of chef Gordon, The 645 features an extensive menu of bar food, burgers, grilled pizzas, and daily specials. Dinners range from $10 to $30.

Diners can enjoy pasta, seafood and appetizer specials on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Four sizes of prime rib, including a 20-ounce "steam engine" are offered. Ribs can be ordered as blackened Cajun.

The menu also includes what Nikole said are some "killer desserts."

While many staple items will remain, the menu will change with the seasons. "In the fall," Buitta said, "we will be offering more comfort food on the specials."

Buitta and Nikole said they purchase bread from local bakeries and produce from right across the street at the Blackbird Farm Stand.

The 645 offers a newly renovated interior with a dining area and full bar. Four large-screen TVs hang at the bar, which features signature sangrias, as well as a selection of wines and Stoli Doli vodka. Bloody Marys and mimosas will accompany a brunch menu on Sundays.

Buitta said that he wants to emphasize the family atmosphere of the eatery. "We're not a bar with a restaurant," he said. "We are a restaurant that has a bar."

As time goes on, the Buittas hope to offer take-out, expand to outside catering, and build a function room for wedding and baby showers, birthdays and other celebrations.
