Goho becomes assistant principal at Birchwood Middle

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Melissa Goho will take over as the assistant principal of Birchwood Middle School after Janine Napolitano left the position to become principal of Stephen Olney Elementary School.

According to Supt. Melinda Smith, Goho received her master of education degree in administrative leadership from Providence College. She also holds a second master of education degree in elementary/special education from Providence College.

Goho, a National Board Certified Teacher, worked for the Lincoln School Department for 10 years as a reading specialist.

She also taught for several years in Providence, starting her career at Mt. Pleasant High School.

Smith stated that Goho served as a mentor coordinator and induction coach, an American Federations of Teachers Delivering Effective Professional Development trainer and a reading comprehension instruction trainer.

"Goho is a great addition to the North Providence Leadership Team," she said. "Her expertise in the area of reading, mentoring, instructional technology and leading professional development will assist the faculty and staff to meet the goals of the Birchwood Middle School Improvement Plan to improve student achievement."

Goho is the wife of North Providence High School Principal Joseph Goho and despite the relationship Smith advised that Goho was a "top candidate" for the position.

"Goho is an amazing educator and we are fortunate to have her as an administrator in North Providence," Smith reiterated. "She has an extensive background in literacy, especially reading, technology and professional development. Birchwood teachers need support to improve the reading scores as they have slipped last year based on the NECAP assessment."

Smith said the process for hiring applicants for the School Department is rigorous. She said each person received a set of questions, which were scored by a screening team.

At the end of the interviews the scores were tallied and Smith interviewed the top three candidates.

She said she then made a recommendation to the School Committee, who ultimately chose the final candidate.

"The district has many relatives working in our schools," she concluded. "Goho is assigned at Birchwood Middle School and her interactions with her husband will be when we meet as a full administrative team. North Providence is lucky to have both Joe and Melissa leading our schools."
