Author Sobel to speak Sept. 5 at Skyscrapers meeting

SCITUATE - Dava Sobel, author of "Longitude," "Galileo's Daughter" and "A More Perfect Heaven," will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of Skyscrapers Inc., the Amateur Astronomical Society of R.I., on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., at the Scituate Community House, 546 West Greenville Road.

Sobel's talk will focus on "Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time," determining a ship's position at sea. John Harrison spent much of his lifetime attempting to convince the 18th century British admiralty to adopt his time keeping invention to determine longitude, and capture the prize for his efforts.

The program is free, and open to the public

Sobel is currently the Joan Leiman Jacobson visiting nonfiction writer at Smith College, in Northampton, Mass. Her upcoming book, "The Glass Universe," will focus on the slide collection at the Harvard College Observatory. An eclipse chaser, Sobel has witnessed eight total solar eclipses..
