Recount ordered in two local races

PROVIDENCE - State election officials counted about 350 Pawtucket mail ballots at the Rhode Island Board of Elections last Thursday, a process that solidified one local race and called another further into question.

In the at-large race for Pawtucket City Council, Albert Vitali Jr. initially missed a third-place win by just 35 votes to Thomas Hodge. Counting of the mail ballots gained Vitali two votes, meaning he's now down by 33 to Hodge. Vitali had already requested a recount even before the mail ballots were counted. That recount was set to happen Tuesday.

For Pawtucket School Committee, Michael Laznik initially finished out of the top seven seats by 66 votes, coming up short to last-winner-in Joe Knight. A counting of the mail ballots expanded Knight's margin to 89 votes. Knight said Laznik called him shortly after the results were announced to congratulate him on the victory. A recount of the School Committee votes was also set for Tuesday.
