Mark of Jesus seen on tree: 'Quirk of fate' - or faith?

Here is a tree in the yard of Brian Quirk, of North Providence, that holds a mark that could look like Jesus on the Cross. Is it a real spiritual sign or just a random marking on a tree? Brian will only say it's a "spiritual organic phenomenon."

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Residents in the area of Lowe's say they've been inspired by yet another image that could be seen as having spiritual qualities, this one appearing to show Jesus on the cross.

The image is visible in a silver maple tree on the Amelia Court property of Brian Quirk, a man who frequently writes letters to the editor criticizing Mayor Charles Lombardi.

Quirk said people can believe it or not, but the image inside the small oval growth, measuring about two inches wide and a little more than three inches tall, doesn't require much imagination to see Jesus.

"Its ability to evoke a spiritual sense of awe is immeasurable," said Quirk, a non-practicing Catholic.

This "natural organic phenomenon to the faithful" can easily be perceived as Jesus on the cross, said Quirk.

Once again, like with the image of Mary in the cross that caused Catholics to descend on The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary last August.

"It's a question of faith and doubt," he said.

According to Quirk, "the skeptic will always instinctively doubt, while those with faith will always be willing to embrace the pure apprehension of the occurrence."

Quirk's neighbor Nancy Ganem said the image that appears to be Jesus is a compelling one and should not be ignored.

Quirk said he noticed the image after returning from a visit to his father's grave on the sixth anniversary of his death Oct. 12. He saw it for the first time after going out to do some yard work.

"Curiously, it is in the same area where my father would sit outside during his last few months before losing his battle with cancer," he said. "My mother remains with my family and I and is recovering from open heart surgery. A devout Catholic, she finds comfort knowing the image is there."

Quirk said he personally believes the image to be a "quirk of fate."
