Harris J. Gederman - Smithfield

Deacon Harris J. “Harry” Gederman, 78, passed away on Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband to Carol (Sullivan) Gederman for the past 53 years.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Harold and Blanche (Husted) Gederman. Harry graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and Providence College. While in high school, he was an All-State runner and the New England cross-country champion. He served in the Army National Guard.

Harry was a teacher and guidance counselor at Cumberland High School, where he was the boys cross country and the girls track coach. He also worked at St. Raphael Academy, where he was a guidance counselor and served as the boys cross-country coach. In October 1994, he was ordained a deacon in the Diocese of Providence.

Besides his wife he leaves four sons, Kevin J. and his wife Diane, Mark H. and his wife Elaine, Paul H., and Scott D. Gederman and his wife Jennifer; two daughters, Sharon A. Fisher and her husband Dwight, and Elaine M. Harrington and her husband Paul. He was a very happy Papa to his 13 grandchildren, Thomas, Alyssa, Meaghan, Carleton, Kianna, Katherine, Christian, Nicholas, Anna, Paul Jr., Daniel, Rachel and Leah; and beloved uncle to William and Michael Pepin. He was the grandfather of the late Kelly Fisher.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at 10 a.m. from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (Route 44) Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Philip Church 622 Putnam Ave., Greenville at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 p.m.
