SMITHFIELD - Geri Brooks, owner of Mama B'z Pizza, Pasta, and Pints in Smithfield, has taken the phrase "personalized pizza" to a new level.

Customers at the new restaurant, which is connected to Brooks' other establishment, B'z Breakfast, Burgers, and Beyond at 970 Douglas Pike, can request to have a customized picture or logo printed onto their pizza using edible ink, which is great for birthdays, corporate functions, and parties, Brooks said.

"I'm always looking for something different and personalized," Brooks told The Valley Breeze & Observer, adding that kids have been really excited with the finished products.

In addition to pizza, diners can order calzones, submarine sandwiches, and appetizers, as part of the new menu. A large 14-inch specialty pizza averages $15, while an extra large 20-inch costs $21 or $25. Brooks said that they also serve pasta dishes and plan to eventually offer pasta by the pound.

The menu for B'z Breakfast, Burgers, and Beyond still offers breakfast all day, sandwiches, burgers, and salads, as well as seafood and some Portuguese dishes.

"Mostly everything is house-made," she said. "We want to aim to please customers. We want to make sure that they're happy when they leave.

"We've even made dishes to order if we have the ingredients," she added.

Her son Shane Brooks, who Geri says has been in the food industry since he was 13 years old, is the executive chef of both restaurants.

When her son got her involved in opening the first restaurant - B'z Breakfast, Burgers, and Beyond - three years ago, Geri Brooks, a retired Realtor, said that she and her husband, who live in North Smithfield, were ready to retire somewhere warm.

"I didn't know it was going to be by the grill in the kitchen," she said.

The B in B'z is for Brooks, she said, adding that they picked a 'z' instead of an 's.'

"Welcome to B'z. Because we don't want any BS when it comes to comfort food," its website reads.

When a pizza place next door moved out, the Brooks family purchased the space and expanded their restaurant, opening Mama B'z Pizza, Pasta, and Pints in August.

"We thought it was the natural thing to do," said Geri Brooks, noting that the restaurant doubled in size. "I can't do anything in a little way."

A foster mother, Brooks said that her kids have always told her to open a pizza place, which is how Mama B'z got its name. "I've been making pizza in my kitchen for years and years," she said. The two restaurants are housed in the same building and are connected by an entryway inside. Customers can sit on either side of the restaurant and order from either of the two menus, Brooks said. The renovated space can seat roughly 100 people, with 20 seats at a bar in the newer section of the restaurant. With 18 beers on draft, a full-service bar with drink specialities, four televisions, karaoke on Saturday nights, "this is supposed to be a fun place to be," Brooks said.

Her son said they're looking into expanding the hours of the bar, as needed, and to add karaoke on Friday nights as well. Both restaurants offer dine-in, take-out, catering, and can host events or parties on site, Brooks said.

Hours are Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. or close.
