SMITHFIELD – On Dec. 12, the Epic Surfing Narwhal Lego robotics team traveled to Ricci Middle School in North Providence to compete in a qualifying tournament.

The team is made up of nine 5th-graders and one 6th-grade student from Smithfield.

Teams were judged on robot design and execution, a Trash Trek research and solution project, and their teamwork.

Although many of the teams at the competition were made up of 7th- and 8th-grade students, the Epic Surfing Narwhals scored well enough to continue on to the state competition that will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Roger Williams University.
