Speaker will discuss Common Core concerns in Cumberland March 10

CUMBERLAND – A panel discussion that will cover school topics including the Common Core, the PARCC assessment, data collection and changes in homework and curriculum will be held next Thursday evening, March 10, at the It’s My Health store, 1099 Mendon Road, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

It’s organized by Melissa Hecht, of Cumberland, who is a clinical psychologist, and will include Sandra Stotsky, creator of the Massachusetts schools standards and a strong critic of Common Core.

Hecht, who said she hears “a lot of concerns” among parents and feels that information is lacking, is billing this event as a chance to “educate and empower all Rhode Island residents and families.”

She said the evening will include three speakers who will cover information about education nationally, statewide and locally. There will be time for questions and discussion, she said.

The town’s leaders are invited, although the School Committee will be meeting that evening.
