Elvira’s Gifts for Hope helps local families for the holidays

WOONSOCKET – Elvira Protano launched her Elvira’s Gift for Hope Foundation last summer, because she wanted to raise awareness and funds to help individuals and families who are dealing with the debilitating effects of breast cancer.

A stage two breast cancer survivor, the Woonsocket resident said her foundation used the holidays to aid area people throughout the holiday season.

Protano said her motivation for starting the foundation was two-fold. Protano said she wanted to share her experiences with those who are dealing with breast cancer and making sure they do not feel alone in their battle. She also knows that while most money gets allocated toward research, Protano said many folks need help now.

“The holidays are stressful enough without adding presents to the list of bills,” said Protano. “We want to aid in those families – whether they are large families or a single person – who might not have enough to enjoy the season.”

Her outreach program worked similar to a “Secret Santa,” in which the foundation received a list of items for the individual or family in need. Protano said she took the list and purchased the items and personally delivered them to the recipients.

Protano said several area families benefited from the foundation’s generosity.

Protano said Elvira’s Gift for Hope Foundation has raised more than $7,000 since its inception. Besides the holiday program, Protano said the money she gets helps individuals and families dealing with breast cancer to offset bills and expenses ranging from food and clothing to paying for someone’s mortgage and/or car payments.

It is not always the material things that people need that makes them happy, said Protano.

“One thing my Foundation does is help out with the daily expenses when people are unable to work. People do not realize that oftentimes because not only the person affected can’t work, but their spouse may not be able to work either because they are driving to doctor’s visits and treatments,” Protano said.
