Novan indoor track squads claim top-six finishes, new school record at R.I. Classic

PROVIDENCE – The Woonsocket High boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams felt right at home at the eighth annual R.I. Classic, which drew nearly 1,900 high school athletes from around New England and New York, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house.

Leading the Villa Novans was the boys’ shot put relay team of Jared Briere, Raekwon Woodmansee, and Dilyn Cote, which took home a championship plaque by winning the event with a combined throw of 130 feet, 5.25 inches. The trio delivered nearly identical throws, with Briere (43-9.5), Woodmansee (43-4.25), and Cote (43-3.5) each topping 43 feet.

On the girls’ side, Quinn Harlan placed third in the 55-meter dash in 7.49 seconds (after posting a time of 7.35 in the preliminaries), and the girls’ weight relay team of Katrina Kurowski (38-1.5), Marissa Henley (36-6.5), and Gabriela Ribeiro (35-0.75) set a school record and took sixth place with a combined throw of 109-8.75.

Also placing in the top six was the boys’ weight relay squad of Woodmansee (56-3.75), Derin Paskanik (47-11), and Nathan Desplaines (40-9.75), which took fourth, and Harlan, who was also sixth in the girls’ long jump (16-7).
