Co-op hockey team nets 15 goals during 1-1 week

WEST WARWICK – The Johnston/North Providence co-op hockey squad lit up the scoreboard during a pair of Division III games on the road last week, but was able to win just one of the games, outlasting the Narragansett/Chariho co-op team, 8-5, last Wednesday night at URI’s Boss Arena.

North Providence freshman Christian Campbell highlighted the victory by netting his first career hat trick and adding two assists. He scored the game’s first two goals in the opening 10:44 of the contest to help Johnston/NP take a 3-1 lead after a period of play and a 5-2 command at the end of two periods.

NP junior Brandon Tanguay also contributed two goals and three assists, Johnston senior Justin Harvey netted a pair of unassisted goals, and JHS freshman Ryan DiLorenzo added a power-play goal in the second period.

Last Friday at West Warwick’s Magiera Arena, Johnston/NP was on the brink of squeaking out a victory over the West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich co-op team, but WW/EWG scored twice in the final 63 seconds to pull out an 8-7 win that dropped Johnston/NP’s record to 2-5.

NP junior Nathan Nye and Tanguay each scored twice for Johnston/NP, with Tanguay’s second goal giving him a team-high 14 this season. Another NP junior, Amara Gibau, added a goal and two assists, and NP senior Andrew Costa and Campbell provided the other goals.

Johnston/NP won’t return to action until Friday, Jan. 20. That’s when the team will again clash with Narragansett/Chariho in a 9 p.m. contest at the Smithfield Municipal Rink.
