Rizzo pours in 35 points in Cougar basketball team’s defeat to Raiders

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Junior guard Paul Rizzo Jr. delivered one of the best performances by a North Providence High basketball player in recent memory in last Friday night’s Division II game at home against Shea High, as he buried eight three-pointers en route to a career-high 35 points.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Raiders were still able to come away with a 78-55 victory that kept them undefeated in league play, while the Cougars remained in search of their first D-II win.

Junior guard Matt Rohelia also scored 13 points for the Cougars, while Shea had four players score more than 12 points.

Shea opened the game with a 17-5 run and ended up holding a 37-25 lead at the break. NP managed to cut its deficit to 39-31 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Cougars got no closer to the lead.

The Cougars were back in action on Monday night against another one of the division’s unbeaten teams, Johnston High, and this time, the Panthers had a player light up the scoreboard, Ryan Yankee, who scored a game-high 44 points in his team’s 76-53 win. The Cougars, who slipped to 1-7 overall (0-6 in league play) received 15 points from Rohelia and 10 from junior forward Christian Anzeveno.

The schedule gets tougher for the Cougars, who will pay a visit to another undefeated team, Narragansett, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. NP will return home on Friday for a 7 p.m. game against West Warwick.
