WOONSOCKET – A new family-owned business hopes to bring back the successful formula from a once-popular produce shop that closed in 2011.

East Side Produce at 562 Cass Ave. sells fruits, vegetables, herbs, bread, snacks, dairy products and more in a space that once held Auclair’s Furniture, and more recently housed a convenience store.

The business is owned by engaged couple Michael Roy and Nicole Lussier, and customers will often find the pair running the shop together with their 16-month-old baby in tow.

Roy was an employee at Fernandes Produce, a produce shop on High Street in Woonsocket that closed in 2011. He is also a cousin of the former owner, and hoped to buy the business, or rent space in same location, which had also previously held Gardella’s Wholesale Fruit and Produce. That changeover, it seems, wasn’t attainable, but Roy’s new endeavor hopes to bring back much of the same concept.

Lussier also works as an assistant manager at Calvin Kline in Wrentham Outlets.

The business just opened, and is still in its beginning stages, but Roy says you can expect big things to come, with the launch of a deli and the addition of organic foods. He currently buys the produce fresh daily in Providence, and is in talks with local farmers to offer an even greater selection. Shoppers can currently find deals on items such as honeydew melon, grapefruit, lettuce, snap peas, cabbage, potatoes, celery, kale, broccoli and much more.

“I’m shooting for the value,” Roy said. “I want people to be able to walk out with a couple of bags of stuff without spending too much.”

East Side Produce is currently open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and has plans to open in the future for some Sunday hours.
