Blackstone River Theatre to offer Irish drum classes

CUMBERLAND – As part of their Heritage Arts Studio initiative, Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., will offer an eight-week session of classes in bodhran, the Irish drum.

A complete beginner and a continuing beginner/intermediate class will be taught in a group setting by instructor Kyle Forsthoff.

The eight-week bodhran class will be offered on Sundays, 10-10:50 a.m. for complete beginner; and 11-11:50 a.m for continuing beginner/intermediate, from Sept. 17 through Nov. 12. The classes are geared toward adults and teens. A minimum of six students is needed to hold class, with a maximum of eight students. The fee for the session is $125 and prepayment is necessary. Students must have their own bodhran and tipper.

The bodhran is a small handheld Irish frame drum consisting of a goatskin playing surface stretched over a wooden frame. The drum can be struck with the hand, “finger style,” but most Celtic percussionists strike the drum with a double-headed knobbed stick known as a tipper.

Forsthoff has been studying and playing Irish percussion for more than 10 years. He performs as a member of Fellswater and has also shared the stage with artists including The Vox Hunters, Lindsay Straw, Torrin Ryan, and Joey Abarta.
