BHC celebrates 'National Sewing Month' with volunteer activities

LINCOLN – Blackstone Heritage Corridor Inc. is celebrating National Sewing Month this September with sewing and textile volunteer activities. Its first event will be at RYCO Creative Sewing Center, 25 Carrington St., on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

Bonnie Combs, marketing director for BHC, said the first volunteer project includes stitching together fabric plastic bag collectors in efforts to educate people about the recycling of plastic bags and film.

“There are still many people who are not aware that they can bring their plastic bags back to grocery stores and other large retailers for recycling,” Combs said.

Combs said she also often brings her sewing machine to community events to show people how to make reusable shopping bags out of T-shirts.

Combs said with "America Recycles Day" on Nov. 15, this volunteer effort will be a "great community service project."

Volunteers do not need to own a sewing machine, Combs said, as she and other volunteers have a number of machines for use.

Donations of more sewing equipment, fabric and supplies will be accepted, Combs said.
