Parlons Francais resumes tonight

WOONSOCKET – The group Parlons Français resumes tonight, Thursday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Harris Public Library on Clinton Street.

The group was formed after the premiere showing of “Reveil – Waking Up French” in Woonsocket 16 years ago. According to proponents, the documentary elicited a stirring emotional reaction among Franco Americans about their lost maternal language.

The gathering focuses on regaining spoken French. Research in linguistics has demonstrated that if a person has been exposed to a language in their past, the language is not lost; it is merely “asleep” stored away in the deep recesses of the brain. Parlons Français, through playing word games, singing, readings and vocabulary enhancement, helps to re-awaken the French language and enables participants to regain their French language.

The group is facilitated by Roger and Claudette Laliberté of the French program L’Écho Musical on WNRI, and Sylvia Bartholomy of the American French Genealogical Society.

Parlons Français meets from 7-9 p.m. the second Thursday of every month from September through May at the library. The program is free and open to anyone who wants to regain their French or just hear it spoken.
