Seven spots remain for Autumnfest ‘Mega War’ teams

WOONSOCKET – “Mega War,” New England’s largest co-ed tug o’ war competition, still has space for six adult and one high school team for the event, scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 8, during the Autumnfest weekend at the World War II Veterans Memorial Park.

Mega War will be held, beginning at 1 p.m. with team certifications (weigh-ins) at 11:30 a.m. The event will take place near the new basketball courts, along East School Street. The event has steadily gained in popularity through the years, but was not held the past two years. In 2015, park construction put Mega War on hiatus, and last year’s event was washed out by heavy rains.

The high school category is limited to active enrolled students only. More than one team per school may participate. There is no fee for high school team participants. There is a $100 fee for open division teams. All teams must weigh no more than 2,500 pounds

Prizes in each category are $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, and $250 for 3rd place finishers. The competition is limited to the first 10 registered teams in each category.

Mega War is a unique style of tug o’ war event as the participants are starting from either the prone or supine position. The rope used is a former tugboat rope used to tow ships. To win the double elimination event, pullers must spring-up, and pull the rope 1.5 feet. The competition requires speed, agility, power, stamina and teamwork.

Registration forms and additional information are available upon request by either e-mailing Cheryl Savaria, sporting events coordinator, at or by calling Richard Savaria at 401-527-8959.
