George C. Hobson – Cumberland

George C. Hobson, of Cumberland and recently of Narragansett, passed away on September 30, 20 days after his 90th birthday. George was predeceased by his wife, Madeline Carr.

He was the son of the late James and Alice (Fregeau) Hobson. George grew up in the Lonsdale section of Cumberland where he made childhood friendships that lasted throughout his lifetime. He was an army veteran serving his country in post World War II Germany.

George dedicated his life to public service. He was among the first public housing directors in the country and a nationally recognized expert in the field of public housing. He was the first Director of the Cumberland Housing Authority, a position' he held from its inception in 1966 until his retirement in 1987. George was also the past Director of the South Kingstown Housing Authority. He never grew tired of championing the rights of individuals and families to their entitlement to better housing and job opportunities. George rarely met a person he didn't like. He was a gracious and caring man. His family will forever remember his favorite saying, "Don't forget, we are for the needy, not the greedy."

George is survived by his two daughters, Maureen A. Hobson, and her husband, Roger Coutu Jr., and Diane M. Fitzpatrick and her husband, Michael; his grandchildren, Michael, Andrew and Maureen; and his siblings, Muriel Quinn, Margaret Corbett and William and Edward Hobson. He was predeceased by his sisters, Pauline, Alice and Martha, his brothers, James, Richard, and Danny, and his step-sisters Anne and Annette. George is also survived by his caring and constant companion, Ellen Carr. George spent the last year of his life in comfort with the staff at Sunny View Nursing Home in Warwick, a special place.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to calling hours on Wednesday, October 4, at J. J. Duffy Funeral Horne, 757 Mendon Road. Rte. 122, Cumberland, from 9 to 11 a.m., at which time a short service at the funeral home will take place. Burial will take place immediately following in Resurrection Cemetery.
