Cumberland police accepting applications for employment

CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland Police Department is now accepting applications for its 2018 recruitment process.

Applications for officers will be accepted through Dec. 31. They are available online at or at the police station and must be returned in person or by mail to Police Department Headquarters, 1380 Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, RI 02864, no later than 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31.

As vacancies occur in the department due to retirements or newly created positions, they are filled from the list.

The minimum qualifications to apply to become a Cumberland police officer include the following:

• Must be at least 21 years of age, or have served two years active military service with an honorable discharge.

• Possess an associate’s degree or 60 college credits, prior to appointment.

• Must possess a valid operator’s/driver’s license.

• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.

Additional requirements include passing a physical fitness test battery for both entering into and graduating from the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy. The department advises applicants to start now with an ongoing physical fitness program, in order to be in good physical condition to successfully compete for employment and complete the police academy.
