Joan C. Smith – Smithfield

Joan C. (Zankowski) Smith, 84, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018. She was the beloved wife of James R. Smith Jr.

Born in South Boston, she was a daughter of the late John and Esther (Ignatavich) Zankowski. She lived in East Greenwich before moving to Smithfield in 2001.

Mrs. Smith was devoted to her family and faith. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed gardening, bowling and traveling to her favorite place St. Maarten. She was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Smithfield. Mrs. Smith was a Senior Olympian, a member of the Smithfield Senior Center, board member of the Village of Summerfield and a volunteer for the Board of Elections in Smithfield and East Greenwich.

In addition to her loving husband of 64 years, she is survived by her children, John J. Smith (Susan) of Braintree, Mass., Julie Ann Roberts (Charles) of Lincoln, Janine T. Valsamis (John) of Commack, N.Y., Joel C. Smith (Kathleen) of Stonington, Conn., and Jeffrey M. Smith (Coleen) of East Greenwich.

She was the sister of Claire Freeman of Bridgewater, Mass., and grandmother of Kimberly and Lauren Roberts, Jacquelyn and Jonathan Valsamis, Gregory, Kathryn, Matthew, Allison and Cameron Smith.

Her funeral was held Jan. 22, 2018, at 8:45 a.m., from the Tucker-Quinn Funeral Home, 643 Putnam Pike (Rt.44), Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michael Church, 80 Farnum Pike, Smithfield. Burial was in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael Church will be appreciated.
