J. Richard Charland – Cumberland

J. Richard Charland, 84 passed away Wednesday peacefully surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Elizabeth J. (Donnelly) Charland. They were married for the past 56 years.

Born in Taunton, Mass., he was the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Dame) Charland. He was a lifelong resident of Cumberland, residing in Albion for the past four years.

He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was an avid fisherman, and also enjoyed reading books and spending time with his family. If you asked him how he was doing, he would always say "I never had it so good."

He was the Grand Marshal in 2015 for the Arnolds Mills annual 4th of July Parade, Cumberland.

Mr. Charland was an educator for the Cumberland School System for over 30 years. He taught in the business department for 3 years. He was the dean of students for many years and ended his career as the business manager for the school system.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Madonna Thompson and her husband, Joseph, of Cumberland, and Jacqueline Eaton and her husband, David, of Cumberland; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Charland; two sisters, Margaret St. Jean of Woonsocket and Jacqueline Kaminski of Tiverton; six grandchildren, Amanda Hayden, Kyle and Jeffrey Eaton, Joseph Charland, Patrick Thompson and Megan Gernt; four great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late John Paul Charland and he was also pre-deceased by four brothers and three sisters.

His funeral will be held Saturday, Feb. 3, at 9 a.m., from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., in St. Ambrose Church, 191 School St., Albion. Burial with military honors will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to American Cancer Society, RI Chapter, 931 Jefferson Blvd., #3004, Warwick, RI 02886.
