Rhode Island State Spelling Bee in Lincoln Saturday

LINCOLN – Local district spelling bee winners will gather together this Saturday, March 17, for a chance at being named the state’s top speller.

The Rhode Island State Spelling Bee will start at 10 a.m. in the Lincoln Middle School auditorium, 152 Jenckes Hill Road, Lincoln.

The public is welcome to attend the State Spelling Bee, which is sponsored by The Valley Breeze.

“I’m really looking forward to Saturday’s State Spelling Bee,” said Breeze Publisher Tom Ward. “We’ve sponsored it for 12 years now, and it’s always an enjoyable morning.”

Jared Pliner, formerly with Channel 12 news, is the pronouncer for the third and final time, said Ward.

“It will be tough to replace him,” he said. “He’s amazingly conscientious about getting the words just right.”

Returning as chief judge is Donna Morelle, former superintendent of schools for Cumberland. Other judges are Martha Correia, of Navigant Credit Union, and Leigh Martin, an English professor at the Community College of Rhode Island.

Recording the Bee for possible playback is Paul Jacob, of Jacob Video and Sound in Woonsocket. Playback is sometimes needed during challenges or for judges to hear again the spelling provided by contestants.

“I’m very grateful to our four co-sponsors: Navigant Credit Union, Dave’s Marketplace, Hunter Insurance, and Anchor Subaru/Nissan,” said Ward. “Their generous gifts help us to not only pay for the Bee, but send the winner and a parent to the National Spelling Bee beginning May 27.”

The 91st Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, from May 29-31.
