James E. Feeney – East Falmouth, Mass.

James E. Feeney, 85, of East Falmouth, Mass., Gulfport, Fla., and formerly Cumberland, R.I., died peacefully, surrounded by his family on March 31, 2018, from multiple myeloma.

Mr. Feeney is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jacqueline Feeney. He was a devoted father of Jennifer Cochrane and her husband, Charles, of Somerset, Mass., Susan Sullivan and her husband William of Milton, Mass., Jill Guidi and her husband, Richard, of East Falmouth, Mass., and James E. Feeney Jr. of Barrington.

He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Juliet Cochrane, Jacqueline, Seanna, Elizabeth, and Christina Sullivan, Kara, Meghan, Nicholas, Katie, Chris, and Patrick Guidi. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, William McDowell, and sisters-in-law Mary Boylan, and Margaret Boylan.

Jim was born in New York City on November 17, 1932, at the Catholic Charities New York Foundling Hospital; he was raised in the foster care system in New York. He graduated from White Plains High School in 1950, earned a Bachelor of Arts in the field of accounting from Iona College in 1954.

After graduation, Jim served in the U.S. Army for two years and the Reserves for six years. He began his career as a Certified Public Accountant at Lybrand, Ross Bros. and Montgomery in New York and later moved to Rhode Island to work as a partner at Raymond F. Murphy and Company. He established his own firm in Cumberland and Providence R.I., and always considered his occupation challenging and exciting.

In addition to his work, Jim was active in a variety of civic and professional organizations, a member of St. John Vianney Church in Cumberland, and St. Anthony’s Church in East Falmouth. An avid golfer and an enthusiastic Red Sox and Patriots fan, Jim loved playing and watching sports with his friends and family; he especially treasured time golfing with his wife and many good friends at Woods Hole Golf Club.

What Jim considered a miracle and a source of great joy began over the summer of 2017 when he connected with his brothers for the first time. Jim felt that his life was complete when
Patrick, Hugh, Tom, Joe, and John Cooney, and many Cooney family members, traveled from Connecticut, New York, and Georgia to meet Jim for the first time last fall. Three generations of Feeneys and Cooneys will remember Jim as a man of great integrity and warmth.

The family expresses their extreme gratitude to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice of Cape Cod for the loving care they gave to Jim. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s memory may be sent to Catholic Charities or the VNA Hospice of Cape Cod.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy, E. Falmouth, Mass., on Saturday, April 7, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully
invited to attend.
