NORTH PROVIDENCE – Catarina da Silva announced she’s running for the District 2 School Committee seat being vacated by Donald Cataldi. She said she has chosen North Providence to “give back and utilize my educational knowledge and experience to improve our schools because this is where I live and where I have chosen to settle down and raise my family.”

Da Silva is principal of a middle school in Fall River, which she attended as a child, and said she has a proven track record of success in turning schools around. She previously taught in Providence and Boston public schools, and obtained her doctorate at New York University. She has served as a university professor in an educational leadership program and assumed the role of program director and liaison to an international leadership program.

With more than 30 years of experience in education, she said she understands the importance of effective leadership to improving teaching and learning and what it takes to lead great and safe schools for all children, including her own.

“Together, we can expand opportunities to achieve for young learners and leaders and contributing members of an ever-changing and diverse society,” she said. “Together, we can work to make schools better, stronger, safer.”
