De la Cruz announces Senate bid for District 23

Jessica de la Cruz of North Smithfield has announced her candidacy for State Senate District 23, covering Burrillville, Glocester and North Smithfield. De la Cruz, a lifelong Rhode Island native and first-generation American born to Portuguese immigrants, will run as a Republican for the seat vacated by Sen. Paul Fogarty, who will not seek re-election in November.

For more than 20 years, she has actively participated in her community through soup kitchens, toy drives, food drives, nursing home visits and youth programs. She left the workforce five years ago to stay at home with her three young sons. She and husband David have been married for 17 years.

With two children in the North Smithfield public school system, de la Cruz is invested in Rhode Island’s long-term future and hopes to develop the state economically by not only appealing to young Rhode Islanders, but also attracting the best and brightest from around the country. She has always been civically engaged by sharing her concerns and frustration with the status quo with lawmakers. Her platform includes:

• Giving a voice to the concerns and challenges that arise among constituents

• Disrupting business as usual by confronting corruption

• Fighting for transparency and accountability

• Reducing taxation and repealing tolling

• Opposing the Burrillville Power Plant

• Improving school safety

• Improving Rhode Island’s economic climate by creating a welcoming business structure within the state.
