Town to host first Fourth of July fireworks display

NORTH SMITHFIELD – The town of North Smithfield will host its first-ever fireworks display in commemoration of the Fourth of July this year, Town Council President John Beauregard told The Valley Breeze.

The display will take place Saturday, July 14, the week following the Fourth of July, at sundown at the North Smithfield High School athletic fields. According to Beauregard, who is coordinating the display, the fireworks will be funded completely through private sponsorships.

“This is something after I got elected I wanted to see happen but I didn’t want the town to pay for it, so I worked on getting private donations and I got a lot of support,” he said. “I was able to get all completely private sponsorships for this.”

Atlas Fireworks, a New Hampshire-based company, will put on the display. Beauregard said the athletic fields were chosen after the company looked at several sites in town as possible locations. As far as he knows, this year’s event will be the first of its kind to celebrate the Fourth of July in North Smithfield, and possibly the first town-wide fireworks display ever. He said he hopes to make it an annual event.

“They promised it’s going to be a spectacular event,” he said. “There’s going to be plenty of room for everybody. We scoped out a couple of different locations, and that one ended up being the best location.”

The date was chosen to avoid conflicts with fireworks displays in neighboring towns on the weekend immediately following the Fourth of July, he said. The rain date will be the following evening, July 15. Sponsorship for the event will also fund transporation for area seniors.

“There will be a bus that will stop at the senior living locations in town and offer free rides from the event,” said Beauregard.

As of Tuesday, Beauregard said he had received sponsor commitments to cover about three-quarters of the $12,000 cost of the display and is still accepting additional sponsors.
