Blackstone police charge man with driving under the influence following crashes

BLACKSTONE – A Woonsocket man was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after striking multiple vehicles and crashing his own vehicle on Main Street late Tuesday night.

William Halfelder, 59, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for medical care after Blackstone Police responding to reports of a crash near 97 Main Street found him bleeding from the nose and head outside his Dodge van around 9:45 Tuesday night.

According to the police report, witnesses told police they saw Halfelder driving down Main Street and swerving all over the road. As he approached the intersection with St. Paul Street, he struck a vehicle that was stopped at a red light. The female driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported Halfelder left the scene of the accident and, a short distance later, struck another vehicle head-on. The male driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

When police arrived at the scene, they determined Halfelder had allegedly been driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and should be administered the overdose-reversing drug Narcan. Further investigation found he had allegedly struck more vehicles in Woonsocket prior to the incidents in Blackstone.

Halfelder was charged with operating under the influence of drugs, operating under the influence of alcohol (fourth offense), leaving the scene of personal injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop/yield and failure to drive in the right lane. He was issued a summons to appear in court at a later date for arraignment.
