Save the Bay offers lighthouse tours

PROVIDENCE – Save the Bay is offering three lighthouse tours this summer.

• The Northern Bay Lighthouse Tour with Save the Bay will run on Saturdays, July 21 and Sept. 15, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The tour leaves from 100 Save The Bay Drive, Providence.

Enjoy the historical sites of the upper reaches of Narragansett Bay and the Providence River. Views include Gaspee Point, Hog Island, Prudence Island, and Conimicut Point. There will be eight active and inactive lighthouses throughout the tour, including a stop at Pomham Rocks lighthouse.

This tour costs $50 for Save the Bay and U.S. Lighthouse Society members/seniors, and children age 3 to 12. The cost is $55 for non-members. For tickets, visit http://www.savebay.org/northern.

Those who are U.S. Lighthouse Society Passport holders will have an opportunity to get their passports stamped.

• The Southern Bay Lighthouse Tour with Save the Bay will run on Saturdays, July 14 and Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., leaving from Alofsin Piers, Fort Adams, Newport.

This tour includes sightseeing the lower part of Narragansett Bay. There will be views of the Newport Pell Bridge, Prudence Island, and historic Fort Adams. There will be 11 active and inactive lighthouses, and a stop at Rose Island for lunch and a tour of the Rose Island Lighthouse and grounds. Guests will be able to climb up the tower to view the new Fresnel lens up close.

This tour costs $60 for Save the Bay and U.S. Lighthouse Society members, and $65 for non-members. For tickets, visit http://www.savebay.org/lighthouse-southern.

• The Ultimate Lighthouse Tour with Save the Bay will be a seven-hour-long narrated lighthouse cruise. It will run on Saturdays, July 28, Aug. 11, and Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is located at 100 Save the Bay Drive, Providence.

This tour includes 19 active and inactive historic Rhode Island lighthouses, while taking in views of the Newport Pell Bridge, Gaspee Point, Prudence Island, and other spots along the way. Starting in Providence, it will motor down the West Passage to Newport and return home via the East Passage. A lunch stop at Rose Island will include a tour of Rose Island Lighthouse and grounds.

The Ultimate Lighthouse Tour costs $90 for Save the Bay and U.S. Lighthouse Society members/seniors, and children age 3 to 12. It costs $100 for nonmembers. For tickets, visit http://www.savebay.org/lighthouse-ultimate.
