NORTH PROVIDENCE – A former carpet store on Mineral Spring Avenue has been transformed from vacant retail/warehouse space into a family fun center called Fab-YOU-Us, offering a destination for play, fitness and celebrations.

The center is owned by Tracie Amaral – also known by her birthday clown name “Krazie Tracie” – who has worked with children in many capacities, from the classroom to camp. Fab-YOU-Us includes an indoor play park and open activity area, arts and crafts zone, interactive games and a variety of fitness classes, including dance, yoga and self-defense. The expansive space is split into sections, with an open play area off the lobby. An indoor playground structure invites children to climb and explore, with bouncy balls, fort-building materials, stacking cups, building blocks and a large, blow-up hamster wheel. A dining area with tables can double as a craft room.

A soundproof room earmarked for quiet space when not in use has been equipped with BEAM Eyeclick technology, a projection system that displays an interactive video game onto the floor. Amaral’s team will also set up a stage and costume closet, for children to act in their own plays. A large fitness space has mirrored walls, hardwood floors and ballet bars, where Amaral and her team of instructors will teach classes.

“We have something for everyone,” she said of the offerings at Fab-YOU-Us, which she hopes will be a “one-stop-shop” for busy parents hoping to please children with a variety of interests. “We want to offer something for each family member to stay active and engaged,” she added.

The concept for Fab-YOU-Us was inspired in part by The Little Gym of Smithfield, where Amaral used to take her three sons, Kaden, Riley and Dylan. The idea to open her own children-centered destination was born out of her desire to spend more time with her children.

Parents and guardians may drop off their children or stay and participate in the fun. Soon, Fab-YOU-Us will offer Family Play Dates, or designated Friday nights of informal group discussions and networking for the grown-ups, while the children play.

This summer, Fab-YOU-Us is offering morning and afternoon sessions for children ages 5-12 (or, you can bring a lunch and stay all day). Amaral said the summer sessions are a step away from the traditional summer camp structure of rotating stations.

Morning sessions are 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the 1-4 p.m. afternoon session. A single session is $30 for members and $33 for nonmembers.

“No sunblock, bug spray, or change of clothes necessary,” Amaral said.

This fall, Amaral will begin offering before- and after-school care at Fab-YOU-Us for Whelan students, including drop-off and pick-up from school. During the day, there will be classes for ages 3-5, home-schooled students, and their caregivers. The center will also offer hourly/drop-in programs for dance, self-defense, yoga, arts and crafts, drama and music ($12 for members, $15 for non-members).

The center is located at the back of the Dexter Training Concepts building at 1420 Mineral Spring Ave., next door to Whelan Elementary School.
