Major Division all-stars top Middletown, fall to Cranston in state tourney

WARWICK – A night after opening the double-elimination state tournament with a mercy-rule victory, the Cumberland Youth Baseball/Softball League’s Major Division ages 11-12 all-star softball team suffered a lopsided loss on Tuesday in the winners’ bracket final.

District I champion Cranston National sent Cumberland into Wednesday night’s losers’ bracket final by rolling to a 16-1 victory at Warwick’s North Bend Street complex.

District IV champion Cumberland, which is seeking its first state title since 2013, played District III champ Warwick North on Wednesday night. The winner of that game will take on Cranston National on Thursday.

On Monday, Cumberland scored seven times in the home half of the fourth inning to break open a close contest and roll to an 11-1 win over District II champion Middletown that was halted in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule.

Caroline Lanzi picked up the win in the circle by pitching a two-hitter that included nine strikeouts and three walks, and she also aided her cause offensively by collecting two hits, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Her catcher, Erin Bessette, also knocked in three runs; Lindsay Molis and Reilly Austin each added two runs, and Hannah Michalski capped the fourth-inning rally with a two-run single.
