Shallcross Smith promotes small business initiatives

CUMBERLAND – With more than 45 years of experience as a business owner, Mary Ann Shallcross Smith says she’s seeking a seat in the House of Representatives “to be a voice for small business.”

A former chairwoman and current board member of the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, she is a Democrat running for a seat being vacated in District 46 in Lincoln and Pawtucket.

Starting in 1972 with one childcare facility in her home, Smith expanded to the current 16 licensed statewide locations. She president and CEO of Dr. Day Care. Shallcross Smith said her real experience and pro-business initiatives include fighting to cut red tape, meaningful regulatory reform, affordable health care for small business owners, and a small business tax credit for businesses seeking to expand.

More than 96 percent of businesses in the state are small businesses, which are the backbone of the economy,” said Shallcross Smith.
