Matthew J. Gannon – Cumberland

Matthew J. Gannon, 89, of Cumberland, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Veronica (Burke) Gannon. They were happily married for 53 years.

Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Matthew and Anna (Dunleavy) Gannon.

Matthew was an air force veteran of the Korean War. He was a lineman for Verizon for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Matthew was the North Cumberland Fire Warden for 16 years, he was a member and past president of the IBEW, Local #2323, he was a lobbyist and past president for the AARP, Local #4646, and was instrumental in starting the Cumberland Colts in 1962.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children Margaret Ballirano and Mary Gannon; his brother, Raymond Gannon; and his grandchildren, Ryan and Nicholas Ballirano, Kaley, Emma, and Colin Gannon. He was the father of the late Michael Gannon and the brother of the late Mary McHale, Margaret Durkin, Joseph, John, Thomas, and Agnes Gannon.

The funeral will be held Saturday, December 8 at 9 a.m., from the O’Neill Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Road, Cumberland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., in Saint Joseph Church, 1303 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Burial will be in Mount Saint Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., in the O’Neill Funeral Home.
