Turcotte family thanks North Smithfield

On Aug. 23, 2017, Spc. Matthew Turcotte was killed at Fort Carson, Co., during a military training exercise. He was from North Smithfield and a 2015 graduate of North Smithfield High School. He was also a captain of the varsity football team. His 20th birthday was one month earlier.

Matt was our son, our grandson, our brother, our nephew, our cousin and, for the briefest of times, our husband. During halftime of this year’s delayed Thanksgiving game, our family was presented with Matt’s retired football jersey, the American flag which flew over the field and a beautiful wooden plaque. The ceremony was tremendously well done and meaningful to us.

We would like to give special thanks to the North Smithfield Town Council and School Committee; the North Smithfield Police and Fire; the Patriot Guard Riders; the North Smithfield varsity football team; Coach Wes Pennington; Athletic Director Matthew Tek; Army SFC Paul Hulkow Jr.; and North Smithfield Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman Tony Guertin.

We would especially like to thank the people of North Smithfield for the love and support you have shown us over the past year. Nothing will bring Matt back to us, but this is a great step in assuring that his memory and accomplishments are not forgotten.
