CHS senior Barboza is named December’s top student-athlete

CUMBERLAND – Cumberland High senior Olivia Barboza, who is a tri-captain on the school’s girls’ swim team, was recently named the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s December Showcase Cinemas Student-Athlete of the Month for her accomplishments in swimming and community service.

In the pool, Barboza, who was nominated for the award by her coach, Rod McGarry, is projected to qualify for next month’s state championship meet in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, and relay events. She was also a member of the Clippers’ cross country program for three years and will participate in her fourth year on the girls’ outdoor track and field team this spring.

In the classroom, Barboza is carrying a B+/A- grade-point-average with a rigorous course load, and outside of it, she has made it her mission to do everything she can to better the lives of the less fortunate in Cumberland and the Blackstone Valley area.

She coordinates team activities to prepare food baskets and provide gifts to families who cannot afford them during the holiday season. To fund these activities, she has organized the B. Glad Memorial 5K, which for the past four years, has taken place at the Monastery and raised over $9,000 for the Happy Basket Program.

Barboza is also an active participant in Cumberland High’s Best Buddies program.
