Martin & Associates could be brought back as needed

CUMBERLAND – A company first hired back in 2014 to provide communication and public relations services to Cumberland schools is no longer under contract, and school officials aren’t planning to bring the company to complete day-to-day work.

School Committee Chairman Paul DiModica said the most recent work by Martin & Associates Management Consulting was on last November’s $83 million facilities referendum, as well as Supt. Bob Mitchell’s Bob Talks video presentations and the high school’s Pathways program.

“(The) Martin & Associates contract expired,” he said. “There (are) no media projects that the school district is looking to promote at this time.”

There will be a need once the facility upgrade work begins, he said, “and the needs for media will be discussed with the new building committee.”

Mitchell currently has the discretion to hire a media consultant “if necessary,” he said.

The Cumberland School Department’s contract with Martin & Associates expired last December. The School Committee voted 4-3 last September to extend the contract through the end of 2018, at an amount not to exceed $19,200 for the second half of the year.

Martin & Associates had been providing communications services under an annual contract with the schools for five years.

School officials in the past have questioned the value of having the company on board when there isn’t a significant matter on the horizon. Former school board member Amy Goggin said last year that she didn’t see the company providing anything the district’s professional employees couldn’t do themselves.
