Smithfield’s Ezeama, Orticerio excel in weight throw at New Balance Nationals

NEW YORK – Smithfield High’s Kendra Ezeama and Anna Orticerio concluded their stellar indoor and track field seasons by placing among the top 12 throwers in the Emerging Elite division’s girls’ 20-pound weight at last weekend’s New Balance National Championships at The Armory.

Ezeama, a junior who recently won the state title and placed third at the New England championship meet in the shot put, finished seventh in the weight with a throw of 46 feet, 6¾ inches, and Orticerio, a senior who will continue her athletic and academic career at Bryant University, placed 11th with a throw of 45-1. Both throws were personal bests.

Both throwers also took part in the Weight-a-rama on March 5 at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house and placed in the top 10. Ezeama finished sixth with a throw of 45-5, Ponaganset sophomore Aria Rao took seventh place with a throw of 45-1, and Orticerio was ninth with a throw of 42-3½.
