Novans’ Coles finishes 12th in weight at national meet

NEW YORK – Woonsocket High sophomore track and field standout Logan Coles grabbed 12th place in the Championship Division’s boys’ 25-pound weight throw on Sunday afternoon at the New Balance National Indoor Championships at The Armory, as he unleashed a throw of 66 feet, six inches that was 5¼ inches away from a top-10 finish.

Coles, who entered this week ranked 13th in the nation in the weight, also took 27th place in the Emerging Elite’s boys’ shot put with a throw of 49-1¾.

In the Champion-ship Division girls’ 20-pound weight throw, senior Marissa Henley placed 23rd with a throw of 47-6¼.

The Novans also had three seniors place among the top 15 throwers in the Emerging Elite’s boys’ division: Derin Paskanik, who took fourth place with a personal-best throw of 62-¼, Nathan Desplaines, who finished seventh with a PR of 59-6¼, and Logan Burda, who placed 13th in 56-2.

Before heading to New York for the national meet, the Novans also took part in the Weight-a-rama competition on March 5 at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house.

Taking places in the top 20 for the boys were Coles (3rd place, 68-7), Desplaines (9th, 57-6¾), Paskanik (12th, 55-7), Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan (15th, 53-9½), Jesse Houle (17th, 51-4¼), and David Marszalkowski (19th, 47-7¼), and the girls’ top throwers were Henley (5th, 48 feet) and Bridget Damon (24th, 36-7).

The Villa Novans will be back in New York this weekend when they send a team of throwers to the USATF Hershey Youth National Championships in Staten Island.

Coles will compete in the shot put and the weight, and Claudia Stepien, Henley, Damon, Paskanik, Desplaines, Burda, Houle, Robinson-O’Hagan, and Marszalkowski will throw the weight. Participating in the youth shot put will be Isabella Piette, Faith Paskanik, and Mickenzie Coles.
