CUMBERLAND – J.B. Cote Construction, a local contractor based in Manville, is expanding its business to the auto repair sector after purchasing Tap Auto Service in Cumberland last month.

John Cote, owner and founder of J.B. Cote Construction, told The Valley Breeze this week the company acquired the auto repair shop from former owner Don St. Germain in March. The repair shop has been in business for more than 60 years at the same location at 25 Grand Ave. off Mendon Road.

According to Cote, the company initially became interested in purchasing the repair shop to obtain extra space to expand their construction business. In addition to general contracting, the company offers excavation and snow removal services and had run out of space at their Railroad Street office to store their equipment.

However, after looking at the property, Cote decided to continue offering auto repair services at the shop under the name Tap Auto Service, including oil changes, brake services, mufflers and truck repairs. His nephew, Miles Benoit, who studied as a diesel mechanic, will manage the business, while St. Germain plans to stay on during the transition period.

Over the past five weeks, the new owners have done extensive renovations on the property, with more changes planned for the future, according to Cote.

“We have a waiting room now, we have a new office, we have bathrooms for our customers,” he said. “We’re going to redo the whole face and redo the whole garage.”

According to a Facebook post, St. Germain has run Tap Auto Service for 43 years and was considering retirement when J.B. Cote Construction made an offer on the property. The business specializes in fleet services and offers repairs and inspections on gas and diesel cars, trucks, RVs, semis and trailers.

J.B. Cote Construction has been in business in Lincoln for 33 years. Cote noted the assistance of his son, Brian, in running the family business and helping to expand it in a new direction.

“He’s a big part of the business. He does everything I do,” he said. “Without him, I couldn’t do what we’re doing. I couldn’t venture off and try doing something a little different.”
